Promptings and coincidences

January 16, 2011

A man shared a version of this often-told story in church today.

A missionary has a thought, thinks that the thought comes from outside of his own brain, most usually from “the spirit,” and calls it a “prompting.” He acts on his thought and ends up meeting someone who eventually joins the church.

Such stories are supposed to promote faith. But most people ignore the hundreds of other times that they followed similar promptings and nothing good seems to come of them. Or if forced to think about it, the excuse is that God has his own reasons for these promptings, even if they don’t know what those reasons are.

I am happy to accept that my thoughts are my own, and to accept the consequences of my own actions.
